Even though________, I'm STILL excited

Well, for most of us, the first week of classes is coming to an end-except those that are taking Saturday morning class-what was I thinking?? Out of all the days in a week-why did I choose Saturday? That puts me on campus six days a week between school and work, leaving Sunday to “rest.” Ha-I don’t know that a college student knows how to rest, much less have the time to. Between work and school and kids-oh that’s right, did I mention I’m a mother of three? Yeah, I definitely don’t know what rest is. And although college is rigorous and tiring, I know I will reap the benefits in the end- Along with a $50,000 student loan debt that I’ll be paying on for the rest of my life!

So anyway, I haven’t technically been enrolled at Lourdes since Fall semester of 2007, which I took incompletes for all my classes and worked on those in Spring ‘08. I’m back full force this semester, taking 4 classes and working on campus part time. I am truly excited to be back. All summer long I’ve been waiting anxiously to step foot in a classroom again, and then it happened. By the third class I attended I was thinking, “Why was I excited again?” After 2 years of college you start to know the routine-reading, paper, reading, paper, reading, paper…at least if you want to teach English someday. Occasionally you’ll have some sort of presentation that lets your creativity shine, but by this point you know the instructors as if they were part of your family, your classmates as if they were your best friends, and the nearest spot on campus to find caffeine-Mountain Dew or coffee-I guess it depends on your taste. So with having said all of this- I’m STILL excited to be back! Yes, I’m more tired than I was waking up at all hours of the night with my newborn, yes, I know the expectations I have to meet in order to get the grades, and yes, I even know where to find the caffeine…but that’s something I love. There’s something familiar and comforting about this college. I feel good when I’m here-like I’m making progress towards something I’ve only dreamt about. You walk through the halls and see smiling, accepting facial expressions, you walk into class only to be greeted and respected by your instructors, and the smell of new school supplies amuses me! Everything just smells so fresh-maybe it’s the weather we have when school begins-FALL! (But I’ll talk about this in a later blog).  So I’m glad to be back…am I ready for all the long hours of homework and studying? NO. Am I excited to spend the next sixteen weeks practically living on campus-going hours without food? NO. But these are the things that become normal when you’re a college student trying to juggle work, school and family…only two more years left! Yeah! Oh wait, then its grad school….
