Franciscan Pilgrimage Update 3 - Tagliacozzo

I must confess - I never would have thought of an excursion to the town where Thomas of Celano lived much of his life and eventually was buried. But now that we're here, it's clearly an integral part of the journey. The home of Francis's first biographer - a man willing to but his talents at the service of the Order (and willing to subject himself to hundreds of amateur critics!) to let the life and light of Francis - and his passionate desire to follow in the footsteps of Jesus - inspire others as well. Centuries later, this quaint little town still looks the same in many ways and has as its 'claim to fame' the body of this humble writer. It makes one wonder...whose story do I tell? What message do I keep alive?

Franciscan Pilgrimage Update 2

These first few days have been 'foundation days'. We missed the day at St. Peter's. Francis had stopped here & exchanged clothes with a beggar -- he wanted to get a better understanding of what it meant to be at the bottom of the pile and at the mercy of others. Of course, the buildings weren't the same back then, but the 'spirit of place' certainly had to be here. Wherever you go, there are sounds of people, of families, of life! Francis must have reveled in it.

The next day -- a visit to St. John Lateran and remembering Francis's first visit to Innocent III. Again he came as a 'beggar', but this time asking for the Church's verbal blessings on his proposed way of life. Years later he returned to receive the official approval for his written rule -- a very different Francis now. He was just as passionate but he carried a few more 'battle scars'. He had spent years walking that fine balance in life of being true to the vision and the dream while trying to live it WITH others (who of course had their own visions and dreams!). He could have gone charging off on his own, but then we probably would not be remembering him today.

Franciscan Pilgrimage - Day 1

Knowing that Francis enjoyed being among the people - it seemed appropriate that we check out a 'marketplace' experience. After much walking, a few tram and train rides, and a bus ride, we finally made it to our destination: Navy Pier.

No, you're not crazy. We had a bit of a detour on our trip. Bad weather forced the cancellation of our flight to Chicago...so the plane for Europe left without Sr. Valerie & me. We spent the night in Romulus, MI. (Romulus...Rome...at least there was SOME connection!) Left for Chicago at 7 am and spent some time on Lake Michigan instead of Lake Trasimeno. 24 hours later than planned, we were on our way...safe and sound. Despite the delays, we were grateful for all the helpful people along the way...and the safety of our journey thus far.

More to follow...from the 'real' pilgrimage sites!

Lourdes takes education, service worldwide through trips spanning the globe

This summer, record enrollment isn’t the only thing that Lourdes College has to celebrate. A number of overseas opportunities are highlighting the 2007-2008 summer session at Lourdes. Faculty and students of the College are taking education and service abroad trips to Hungary, Peru, South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom.

As part of the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE)’s International Leadership Training Program, Lourdes TRiO students Jeannine Harding and Michelle Perkins have been chosen to study abroad at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. During their three week stay beginning June 9, Jeannine and Michelle will participate in a leadership training course titled “World Citizenship: Building Leadership Skills in a Multicultural Society.”

For three weeks in June, Dr. Dariel Jacobs, Director of the Adolescence to Young Adult Education program and Assistant Professor of Education, and Dr. Paul Longenecker, Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies have been invited to teach courses in Hungary as part of the Great Lakes Consortium’s (GLC) American Summer Institute. While in Hungary, Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Longenecker will instruct a group of teachers and students in Szeged, Csongrad and Veszprem on global learning and the English language.

Lourdes Education students Jennifer Globig and Jackie Zervos will be serving as camp counselors with the Camp Adventure™ Youth Services Program. In June, Jennifer will travel to a United State Naval base in Taegu, South Korea. Jackie will travel to Rota, Spain later this summer. Camp Adventure™ is a service learning program that focuses on providing high-quality, high-impact services for children and youth worldwide.

Also this summer, Dr. Martha Gallagher, Associate Professor of Nursing and Lourdes Nursing student Lidia Davis will travel to Chorrillo, Lima, Peru on a mission trip focusing on healthcare. From July 12 to 20, Dr. Gallagher and Lidia will perform health screenings and offer medical care to children in a local barrio (shanty town) and an orphanage.

Sister Survivors

There is so much that we (or at least I) take for granted. That was brought home last summer when Sister Judy, one of the Sisters in our Congregation, shared that she was involved in filming a documentary about Catholic Religious in Europe who were persecuted and tortured under Soviet rule from the 1940s through the 1980s. At the end of our community Assembly last summer, Sr. Judy shared a preliminary film clip that included descriptions of how these women had struggled to secretly continue practicing their religion. Many were harassed, beaten, and tortured. When the film clip was over and the lights came back on, there was not a sound to be heard in the room…and you would have been hard pressed to find a dry eye among us.

This past weekend, a portion of the on-going filming of this project took place here in the Toledo area. If you missed the article in the Toledo Blade, please check it out here.

Sr. Judy hopes that the documentary (Sister Survivors: Catholic Sisters and European Communism) will be ready to be aired next year. It will be a powerful testament to the courage and the faith of countless women and men who made a conscious choice to quietly and peacefully live out their beliefs despite opposition from the government. And it will be a moving reminder of the freedoms that we so often take for granted.

Time Flies, Whether You're Having Fun or Not!

As I sit in my patient's room to keep an eye on them, it has dawned on me that I haven't posted in a month.  How this month has flown by, with some days I wish would last forever and other days that couldn't end soon enough.

I am finally transitioning into the world of nursing and feeling comfortable with it.  Aside from the things that are beyond me, such as neuro and open heart surgery, I have really started to piece things together and get my routine down.  Managing two stable patients is no longer something I feel apprehensive about; it's something I look forward to.  I'm now at the phase in my program that I am able to start taking the unstable patients, yet those are hard to come by, especially when you have a preceptor who wants to treat you like a nursing student.

Six months is a decent amount of time to get acclimated to the world of nursing.  Routines fall into place, time management continues to improve, and patients begin to push your buttons even more as the mere thrill of taking care of a squirrely patient wears off.  Tolerance levels and empathy levels begin to ebb and flow, as you begin to not feel sorry for the people who overdose; rather, you feel sorry for their families and friends.  And also, as evidenced by tonight, your patience wears extremely thin when you realize four hours into your shift that your night will be spent reminding your patient not to pull on wires or IV's and that no one wants to see their goods, if you know what I mean.

Night time does strange things to patients, young and old.  Most of the older folks I take care of who are not sedated and on a ventilator get Sundowners.  And they are nuts.  There is nothing you can do to prevent it, just go with it.  Like my patient tonight.  From tossing off the blankets to pulling off the gown to pulling off the wires and IV's, it becomes like a three-ring circus.  As much as it is irritating, it can be amusing.

Regardless of the patients I get now, it dawns on me a little more every day that I am finally adjusting to life after nursing school and that I can get the hang of this.  Ok, I gotta go keep my guy from pulling out his NG!
