Are you kidding me?

I love politics - sometimes. Not today. I am teaching an American Government class this semester for the History Department. Like most students that I have had in the past in PLS 122, many this semester are not terribly excited about the subject. My initial reaction to their disinterest is to be horrified. Why do they not have the same passion that I do for government, public policy and politics? I just can't figure it out. Then I get home last night to discover "lipstick gate" has swept the nation. Okay, I am reminded effectively of why many turn off to any mention of politics.

I have been involved in politics for years. In my past life, I actually was active in running political campaigns. I thought that I had seen everything. Guess not. Now, a "major issue" about lipstick and pigs! I saw the clip in which Obama uttered the phrase, "you can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig" and , of course, I was outraged (yeah, right!). He had been talking for several minutes about Bush policies and how McCain was running from them even though he had supoprted them. In characterizing McCain's "change" argument, he used the "lipstick' line. Now, naturally he was talking about Palin who used the word lipstick in a speech. What the HECK? Are you kidding me? Oh, the anguish from the McCain camp. The "slur" had hurt some feelings. What slur you ask. I have no idea. But McCain certainly saw one, or at least his campaign strategists had told him, probably on a teleprompter, that a "slur" had occurred. Oh, the unfairness of it all! Leave Sarah alone you pigs!

I have my differences with Obama. His willingness to move from one quagmire in Iran to another unwinnable fiasco in Afghanistan (please place call to Russian leaders) is distressing. His willingness to reconsider eliminating tax cuts for the rich at this time is unfortunate and his support for charter schools, which serve to cost public schools needed money, is disheartening. But, at least he is talking about policy issues. Come on John, say something meaningful, if your knowledge of economic issues goes beyond that which can be written on a napkin. Say something about your foreign policy views. Do you believe in Nation building as part of our international role? How many more billions will you spend to spread democracy worldwide? Would a traditional conservative support such efforts? Come on John, say something. And, while you are at it, let Sarah say something. Let her tell us about her desire, as a conservative who supposedly believes in limited government, why the government should be involved in a woman's decision making process. Let her tell us if she believes in "equal pay for equal work" for women.

On second thought John, keep quiet about such things. Continue to discuss "lipstick" and other pressing issues such as who Obama hung around with years ago. That may well get you elected. Then we can spend four more years complaining about all the things that have disturbed us for the past eight years. Joy to the World!

Interesting comments. Could you explain, "why the government should be involved in a woman's decision making process."? Dale are you advocating for abortion rights?

Dale have you read McCains book? Have you watched all of the primary debates - both parties or just the dems? Did you make time to watch both conventions? From your disparging comments I think not.

I had to laugh at the "lipstick" comment by Obama. It shows that as his campaign starts to derail, he is cracking under the pressure. I predict as a desperate attempt to right his sinking campaign that he will axe Biden and bring on Hillary - if she'll have him. But, it would be to little to late.

I am surprised at the tone of your post. But, it does not surprise me. I know that I won't be taking any future classes with you, from your comments It would be a waste of my money.

"I won't be taking any future classes with you, from your comments It would be a waste of my money."

Wouldn't ANY class be a waste of money if your mind is already closed to any new ideas that conflict with your entrenched worldview?

Dale is such a great treat to have at Lourdes College. He is one of the most outstanding professors there. There is not better investment for your money at Lourdes. He actually makes you think and push yourself. Wow - a professor that makes you learn - who would have thought? I have specifically taken classes that I did not necessarily need becuase he was teaching them. He is a fountain of information that anyone should be privileged to learn from. If you weren't so defensive, you could probably learn quite a few things from him as well.

Some people think that Dale is this flag buring liberal, but he is not. Yes - he may lean towards Democratic issues, but he does stand with Republicans on certain issues as well. Don't we all?

One of the reasons why I enjoy his classes are because he is not one of those professors who will hold it against you if you disagree with what he thinks. He likes people to challenge and question him instead of agreeing with everything he says. However - you had better have a logical arguement to back up your statements and not just ramble on because you think you are right.

Points noted and your entitled to your own thoughts.

But, Dale did not answer the question. It is simple : Are you advocating for abortion rights?

The comment that was made,"why the government should be involved in a woman's decision making process" shows that you truly don't even read what people are saying. These words are not out of Dale's mouth, but out of Sarah Palin's! Maybe you should actually read what people are saying, instead of having a closed-mind and getting on the defensive right away. Your comments about Dale Lanigan's class being a waste of money is outrageous. There is a line when blogging on here, and you crossed it! Like I said before, there is a way to disagree without offending others and being completely disrespectful...Perhaps you should really review our blogging policies and that info about online reputation. Not only were you completely disrespectful to Dale, but you've been completely disrespectful to others that have shared their opinions. Haven't you ever heard of the golden rule, "Treat others as you wish to be treated?" I think this might be a good rule to live by...or at least consider. There's no need to be so defensive and angry and disrespectful and unhappy about other's ideologies...that's what makes us all unique in this great country...just something to consider.

Chris,
I would only recommend that often times we can learn quite a bit from those we may not share views with. To critically think about an issue you must first listen to both sides, in the end if it does not change your mind you may have had the benefit of gaining new knowledge to argue your position.
I can assure you that although Dr. Lanigan and I have many political differences I have learned a great deal from him as well as gained a wonderful friendship. I never considered my money spent for his class a waste of money. And as a fiscally conservative individual that says a lot! ;)

An added note: Dr. Lanigan does not use his position in the classroom as his soap box. You would have a wonderful opportunity to share your views with others in the class.

Audrey, I appreciate your response. I do try to look at issues from both sides. I will even attempt to disprove my view by using material that is at odds with it. Sometimes I change my position and at other times the method strengthens my position.

I'm sure that Dale is a great guy and I have spoken with him on several occassions. I am glad to hear that "He doesn't use his position in the clasroom as his soap box."

However, being that these blogs are Lourdes College blogs, and IT posts disclaimers, could these blogs be considered an extention of the classroom? Audrey, I suggest that personal opinion and freedom of speech plays an important factor in blogging and perhaps even in the classroom. However, Lourdes being a Catholic College (with Fransiscan values) must hold itself and others that represent the College, paid or unpaid to a higher standard.

For me this standard is the Truths of the Catholic Church teaching authority, which the institution that is Lourdes College is a part of.

I have attempted to clarify what it was that I read in Dales post, I asked twice: " Are you advocating for abortion rights?"

So far the answer has not been forthcoming.

In good conscience a Catholic paying a Catholic College, many dollars of tuition, should not support any faculty member that promotes (notice I did not say teach) inside or outside of the classroom something contrary to Catholic teachings.

I maybe wrong in my interpretation of Dales public comment on the Lourdes blog, but my request for clarification has not yet been addressed.

I think Chris knows darn well what Dale meant, and is hoping we'll all be shocked to learn that OMG, some professors have the audacity t have their own independent opinions! What if his answer is yes, he is pro-choice? What are you suggesting, Chris? Shoud Lourdes fire a bunch of talented instructors because they don't tow the party line? Because your eduication would suffer as a result. I wonder what your opinions are about the Iraq war and the death penalty since the Church is against those too, you know.

And forive me if I hesitate to provide my full name to someone who thinks bringing concealed guns to class is a good idea.

Savannah, I read his comment and I now have re-read it. The context of the statement still stands. In case I did misunderstand the posts intent I asked the author to clarify it for me. That is not being disrespectful.

If not wanting to spend money on a particular class or even on a particular instructor is a choice. This is not China. I fully realize that if no other options were available for a course that was required for a major, then the options are nil. However if the course(s) are electives, yes I can choose not to take the course/instructor. That is not being disrespectful.

dk, independent opinions aside, Lourdes is a Catholic College and as such has the Magesterium to answer too. You asked "Chris? Shoud Lourdes fire a bunch of talented instructors because they don't tow the party line?"

The Church is not a party line. The Church has addressed this very issue with Catholic Colleges in the documen, Ex Corde Ecclesia. Feel free to Google it and read it.

My views on the Iraq war and the death penalty, perhaps I'll share those via a blog.

You said, "And forive me if I hesitate to provide my full name to someone who thinks bringing concealed guns to class is a good idea." Really, dk you have been posting for several semesters, with only dk as a signature before my CC blog came out. You seem to have an opinion but only if it anonymous.
